She was waiting for him at the edge of the high school parking lot near the woods. She'd heard he lived on the trailer park on the other side of the woods and usually walked to school through the woods, which might have explained his dirty, leaf-ridden appearance at school most days. He was a freak, and everyone had laughed when he'd finally answered back to her observations in the cafeteria, challenged her to a fight. He was a skinny kid, and she was the captain of the women's soccer team for a reason. He looked like a jerk for challenging her to a fight, and he would look even more pathetic once she'd taken him down. Not that she didn't have the varsity boys' soccer squad waiting in the shadows in case things went sideways.

"Tobias!" She peered at her watch; in the dimness it was hard to read. "It's me, Scarlet. It's time for our little showdown. Or are you too afraid to take on the girl you've been creepily stalking all semester?" Wasn't it supposed to be a full moon tonight? But the sky was cloudy.

"Scarlet."

At the sound of her name, she jumped.

Tobias stepped out of the trees. "I wanted to have a civil discussion, once and for all, about the fact that I'm not stalking you. I asked you to a dance. You turned me down. I accepted pretty gracefully, all things being considered, and then you sicced the boys' soccer team on me, and since then, my life has been hell." In the shadows the boy who usually looked pale and drawn looked ghostly and menacing. His dark eyes looked sunken, like empty sockets on a beached white skull, and his dark hair was as messy and leaf-ridden as ever. "I'm not here to fight you."

Scarlet lifted her chin. The boys had told her about all the filthy things Tobias had said in the locker room, about the things he wanted to do to her in revenge for her turning him down and breaking his heart. "Then why are you here?"

"You're bait," he said. "I'm after your friends."

"What friends?" Scarlet asked, but she darted a glance toward the dumpster the boys were hiding behind.

The clouds parted, and silver light flooded the parking lot. Tobias was naked.

"What the hell?" Scarlet backed up a step. "What are you doing? Where are you clothes?" She fumbled for her cell phone. She had to call the cops. He was psycho.

Tobias shrugged, and he was curiously unashamed of his nakedness. "Not worth wasting good clothes on that pack of dogs you call friends."

"What do you mean?" Scarlet asked.

Tobias lunged at her. She screamed and fell back. When she hit the ground, a massive slavering wolf landed on top of her. She curled up, tensed, expecting snarling teeth tearing into her at any moment, but then the wolf was gone, bounding toward the dumpster, and then there were screams.

Scarlet ran.

The next day, the police found a dozen corpses torn apart by a wolf, and Scarlet's soccer team hoodie.
